When Swarthmore College sought to update the aging Mertz Hall dormitories, they turned to our team at Pella of Philadelphia to help them seamlessly blend old-world charm with modern functionality.
Custom Windows Honor Swarthmore's Architectural Legacy
Situated on a picturesque 425-acre campus, Swarthmore College is known for its historic buildings and beautiful grounds. Preserving this architectural legacy was of utmost importance to the college's leadership. Working closely with the project team at Target Building Construction, our experts at Pella of Philadelphia devised a custom window solution that would uphold Mertz Hall's original look and feel while aligning with the broader historic character of the campus.
New Windows Complement Rustic Style and Perfect Fit
Our team understood the importance of ensuring a precise, seamless integration of the new windows with the existing structure. We created custom templates to guarantee a flawless fit for the distinctive arched windows, using a mix of picture and awning windows, paying close attention to the dimensions of all openings. This blend of window styles was recommended not only for their installation fit, but also for their style. Our team selected windows that complement the building’s rustic cottage style to keep the visual appeal of the building feeling cohesive.
Wood Windows Tailor Aesthetic and Enhanced Performance
To achieve the desired visual style, we used a combination of wood double-hung and black casement windows. This classic wood palette beautifully accentuates Mertz Hall's historic stone exterior while also delivering modern functionality. High-performance features — including a clad subsill for water management, raised sills and energy-efficient materials — ensure long-lasting durability and protection against the elements, all while maintaining the building's timeless charm.
By collaborating closely with our team of experts, Swarthmore College successfully navigated the challenges of historic preservation, ensuring the updated Mertz Hall remained true to its architectural roots.
