The homeowners of this 1953 Chicago Ridge, Illinois house were looking to replace the five-wide bow window in their living room. What made this project so unique is how the bow window, which would typically extend outward, is actually inverted. In other words, the five windows join together to form a smooth curve that protrudes into the home’s interior. The owners looked into several different window manufacturers and ultimately landed on Pella for our ability to produce made-to-order windows for custom openings.
Reverse Bow Window Creates Expansive Focal Point
Inverted bay or bow windows are very uncommon, so this was a fun project for the Pella team to work on. The five windows, set side by side, are each the same shape and size. The old windows featured shades and curtains that made the windows feel separate and small. The new bow window is not obstructed by window treatments or grilles. This creates a fluid curve that widens the look of the opening and draws your eye outdoors. The bow window replacement makes this living room stand out among the rest with a reverse curve, wide-angle panoramic view and plenty of natural light.
Venting Windows Increase Air Flow
Compared to the previous bow window, the new one improves ventilation with windows that open and close. In the series of five windows, the second and fourth open. When the air feels dull and stagnant, the homeowners can now liven the space with a refreshing breeze. The uniform spacing of the venting windows creates even air flow and a symmetrical, visually appealing look.
Vinyl Windows Improve Performance
Choosing windows made of vinyl enhanced the overall performance and durability of the window. The multi-chambered frames in vinyl windows help slow the transfer of heat and provide extra support to the window. With fully-welded sashes and frames, these windows are strong and durable. They are also easy to care for and never require painting or refinishing. The homeowners were also thrilled by the noise reduction properties of their expertly installed replacement windows: “The noise we experienced from the road outside of our home is significantly less with the new windows installed!” They are pleased to know their new windows are made to last and tested for exceptional, long-lasting performance.
