Project Details

Situated on the Western border of Massachusetts, the rural suburbs of Berkshire County rest among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Known for its natural beauty and historic architecture, the area offers a variety of uniquely designed homes. We worked with the homeowners of a 1950s cedar shake home to replace their old vinyl windows with new wood windows. They also wanted to install a bay window in place of an old picture window. Our experts recommended Pella Lifestyle Series windows to get the job done.

Black Bay Window Replaces Picture Window

A popular pick for many Massachusetts homes, bay windows are a timeless choice that add character and curb appeal. Extending past the exterior of the home at an angle, these windows provide panoramic views, ample natural light and extra space inside the home. Bay windows feature two operable windows on either side of a picture window. The double-hung windows on the sides open vertically to circulate air through the space. With this project, we included traditional-style grilles on the side panels of the bay window to match the aesthetic of the home. Traditional grilles usually include vertical and horizontal lines that divide the windows into equal sections.

Black Windows Complement Cedar Shake Siding

True to the traditional architecture of the region, cedar shake siding is very popular throughout Massachusetts. Against a backdrop of gorgeous mountains, this wood siding blends in well with the timber surrounding the home. On a recent addition to their house, the homeowners went with black windows. This left the original part of the house looking outdated with mismatched white windows. With new black windows across the entire façade, this home looks more cohesive and intentionally designed.

Wood Windows Offer Performance and Weather Resistance

A major transformation of this project was the shift from vinyl to wood windows. This material change offered significant benefits for the homeowners. As a natural insulator, wood has exceptional energy efficiency to help keep utility costs lower, especially during cold mountain winters. With considerable precipitation every year, this Massachusetts home also benefits from the advanced wood protection on these windows. It helps defend against the effects of moisture, decay and stains from mold and mildew.

This 1950s home needed an updated look and our experts delivered on their promise to get the job done. The homeowners enjoy the transformed look of their new bay window and the improved swap from white to black windows. With new, high-quality wood windows, these homeowners can take in the great Berkshire outdoors year-round for many seasons to come.
