Black Wood Windows Define a Striking Modern New Construction Home

A custom whole-home window and door package designed to emphasize bold architecture, natural light and seamless indoor-outdoor living.

Wide view of modern black home exterior with expansive lawn, layered rooflines, and large windows.

Set among mature trees in Homer Glen, this new construction home makes a dramatic first impression with its dark exterior palette, layered rooflines and clean contemporary forms. The window and door package was selected to support that architectural vision from every angle, using black wood windows throughout most of the home, a matching wood front entry door and durable black fiberglass windows in moisture-prone bathroom and shower spaces.

The result is a home that feels bold and modern from the curb while still creating light-filled, functional interiors for everyday living.

Black Picture Windows Highlight the Home’s Contemporary Architecture

One of the most distinctive features of this home is the extensive use of black picture windows placed strategically across the front elevation, great room, dining space and private rooms throughout the house.

Large picture windows in the dining room and home office create expansive glass walls that bring in natural light while reinforcing the home’s sharp architectural lines. In the great room, oversized picture windows were paired with transom-style windows above the main patio door system to emphasize ceiling height and make the space feel even more open.

Because this was a new construction project, the window sizes and sightlines could be planned around the architecture from the start. That allowed the black frames to function almost like design accents, adding structure and contrast against the lighter exterior cladding while preserving uninterrupted views of the wooded lot.

A Quad Sliding Patio Door Creates a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection

At the rear of the home, the great room opens to the outdoors through an impressive black four panel sliding patio door system that spans nearly 16 feet wide.

This large glass wall was an ideal choice for homeowners who wanted the back of the home to feel connected to the surrounding landscape. The wide-opening design helps merge the interior living space with the patio and yard, making the home feel larger and more connected to nature.

Additional picture windows on both sides of the door, plus a row of transom windows above, continue the glass-forward design language and keep the rear elevation feeling balanced and symmetrical.

Wood Front Door Adds a Softer Architectural Moment

While the home leans heavily into contemporary design, the front entry introduces a softer focal point through a Pella Reserve Traditional front door with an arched top profile.

This was a smart architectural choice for a home with so many straight lines and bold rectangular window shapes. The curved entry opening adds visual interest and gives the front façade a welcoming, custom feel without disrupting the modern aesthetic.

The black finish allows the front door to coordinate beautifully with the surrounding windows, helping the entire façade feel cohesive and intentional.

Black Wood Windows Bring Warmth to Modern Interiors

Inside the home, wood windows help balance the bold black exterior with warmth and richness. The black-stained interiors create a clean, sophisticated look that works especially well in modern spaces with layered textures and neutral finishes.

Casement windows in bedrooms, the exercise room and secondary spaces provide ventilation where airflow matters most, while fixed picture windows maintain unobstructed views in larger gathering spaces.

This mix of operable and fixed windows gives homeowners the flexibility to prioritize ventilation, privacy or expansive views depending on the room—all while maintaining a consistent design language throughout the entire home.

Fiberglass Windows Were a Smart Choice for Bathroom Durability

In the master shower and adjacent bathroom spaces, fiberglass windows were used in place of wood windows.

For homeowners, this is an especially practical design decision. Fiberglass performs exceptionally well in high-moisture areas where long-term durability matters, making it a strong fit for shower and bath windows that are regularly exposed to humidity and temperature changes.

Using fiberglass in these targeted areas allows the home to maintain its black interior and exterior aesthetic while choosing a material optimized for the specific demands of the space.

Whole-Home Windows Designed for a Custom New Build

Because every window and door in this Homer Glen home was selected during the new construction process, the package feels fully integrated with the architecture rather than added afterward. From the dramatic black picture windows to the oversized patio door and arched front entry, every decision supports the home’s modern character and everyday livability.

This project is an example of how thoughtful window and door design can shape the feel of a custom home from the very beginning—bringing together curb appeal, natural light, durability and connection to the outdoors in one cohesive design.
