173 Berks, originally constructed in 1887 for Peter Woll & Sons, served as a warehouse for the manufacturing company, then later housed a Curled Hair & Bristles company and a subsequent feather company. Now, it is home to an apartment complex with modern touches that complement the historic elements of the building.
Preserving Vintage Charm with Authentic Wood Windows
When renovating the warehouse, preserving the building's original character was a top priority. Our team collaborated with Under Construction and Cecil Baker + Partners Architects to give this building new life, and black wood windows played a crucial role in the process.
Pella Reserve windows feature historic elements with uncompromised attention to detail, deliberate proportions and intricate profiles. These details made them an easy choice for this renovation. Since Pella Reserve windows met the necessary requirements, the Philadelphia Historical and National Park Service approved all the renovations, ensuring the building's historic integrity remained intact. 173 Berks was placed on the historic register in 2018.
Choosing Double-Hung Windows
To showcase the building's craftsmanship while providing functionality and comfort for the new residents, we installed wood double-hung windows throughout the property. These windows allowed for the style and versatility needed to complement the original construction.
Double-hung windows are a popular choice for consumers thanks to their easy operation and versatility, allowing residents to clean them and control the airflow in their apartments with minimal effort. The ability to open the windows from both the top and bottom allows access to the exterior glass, making them easy to clean from the inside out.
Wood Windows Deliver Strength and Beauty
The durability and strength of wood ensures that the apartment windows will stand the test of time, making them less likely to need high-maintenance upkeep. The black finish creates a striking contrast against the brick exterior, giving an updated feel to this traditional building.
The new windows feature a factory-applied brickmould and sill nose, as well as a custom-painted, four-inch cedar sill that matches the building’s exterior. A unique circle window in the clerestory of the stair tower adds a distinctive touch.
With newly installed wood windows, 173 Berks is move-in ready and poised to become a sought-after address in Philadelphia.
