This custom new construction home in Plainfield, Illinois was designed with balance in mind. From the symmetrical front elevation to the layered mix of stone, white siding and natural wood porch columns, every exterior element supports a clean, intentional architectural rhythm.
The glass package was designed to reinforce that structure throughout the home. Black wood windows were selected for most spaces, giving the exterior strong definition while allowing for customized interior finishes that shift from dark stained wood in the main living areas to bright white in secondary bedrooms and baths. In the primary shower, a black fiberglass awning window was used to maintain the exterior look while adding durability in a high-moisture environment.
Custom Window Configurations Support the Home’s Symmetry
What makes this home stand out is how intentionally the openings were designed around the architecture. Across the front elevation, stacked picture windows, narrow vertical openings and mulled combinations work together to reinforce the home’s height and clean geometry.
Rather than relying on repeated sizing throughout, the design uses a mix of fixed glass, casements and specialty combinations to give each section of the façade its own visual rhythm. The stone-clad section near the front entry becomes an especially strong architectural anchor, where expansive glass adds dimension without disrupting the home’s symmetry.
This kind of thoughtful sizing and placement is one of the biggest advantages of designing windows as part of a custom new construction plan.

Black-Stained and White Interiors Personalize Each Space
One of the most unique elements of this project is the shift in interior finishes from room to room. Main spaces such as the great room, dinette, stairwell and study use black-stained wood interiors that align with the home’s darker architectural palette.
Upstairs bedrooms, closets and select bath spaces transition to bright white interiors instead, creating a lighter, softer feel in more private areas of the home.
This design choice gives the home more dimension than a single finish carried throughout. It allows the shared living spaces to feel bold and cohesive while keeping bedrooms bright and timeless.
Oversized Patio Doors Expand the Backyard Entertaining Areas
At the rear of the home, large sliding patio doors and wide fixed glass combinations help turn the backyard into an extension of the living space.
The oversized dinette patio door creates an especially strong connection between indoor dining and outdoor entertaining, while additional patio doors in the study and rear living spaces help carry natural light deep into the floorplan.
Because the rear elevation uses multiple large-format openings instead of one singular focal point, the entire back of the home feels open and connected to the landscape.
This approach works especially well in custom new construction homes where entertaining, sightlines and backyard access are priorities from the beginning.
Fiberglass in the Shower Keeps the Design Cohesive
In the primary shower, the design team switched to a black fiberglass awning window to better handle daily moisture exposure.
What makes this choice successful is that it doesn’t interrupt the home’s overall aesthetic. From the exterior, the fiberglass window blends seamlessly with the surrounding black wood windows, preserving the consistent look across the rear elevation.
This kind of room-specific material selection is one of the smartest ways to approach new construction design—using the right material where performance matters most while maintaining architectural continuity.

A New Construction Home Designed Around Light, Symmetry and Flow
This project shows how much influence thoughtful window and patio door design can have on the overall feel of a custom home.
From the symmetrical front façade and room-specific interior finishes to the oversized rear patio doors and durable shower solution, every choice supports the way the home looks and functions.
Rather than serving as a finishing detail, the glass package helps shape the home’s architecture, movement and everyday livability from the earliest design stages.
