The Window Replacement Process

Choosing to outfit your home with replacement windows is a big decision. There are a few different steps to assure the end product meets all your expectations. If you’re not sure how to start, or just need some guidance along the way, read on for our definitive guide to the window replacement process.

Investing in new or replacement windows can go a long way in revitalizing your home. Not only can they increase your property value, level of comfort, energy efficiency and safety and security, but the right replacement windows can help transform your home into what you’ve always dreamed it could be — providing the right aesthetic for memorable moments in your most cherished spaces.

Starting the Window Replacement Process

When taking on a large home renovation project such as upgrading your house with replacement windows, it’s important to know all the steps so you can understand the process and know what to expect.

There are a few telltale signs it’s time to replace your windows. During the winter you may have noticed your home becoming a bit draftier than normal, and realized it might be time to look into replacing your windows. Along with drafts, functionality can present an issue, like if your window is difficult to open or close. You may have noticed condensation or fogging between the glass, or chipping and water stains around the window. Maybe you’re just looking for an updated style and your current windows look outdated. All of these reasons are reason enough to invest in window replacement throughout your house.

Selecting Your Replacement Windows

To get started on replacing the windows in your home, you’ll want to do some research into what types of windows will work best for you. Gather inspiration based on the architectural style of your home or your personal design aesthetic and take some notes. This will help you narrow down what type of window you’re drawn to.

Pella replacement windows are available in three different materials, each with their own unique benefits. Created from an organic material readily available, wood windows are naturally good at insulating. If you live somewhere that experiences extreme highs and lows throughout the year — or maybe just one or the other — fiberglass windows are resilient and hold up against Mother Nature. Vinyl windows are a great option for nearly any home. Vinyl windows are low-maintenance with plenty of finish options to fit any style.

Selecting different types of windows can really allow the character of your home to shine. As architectural styles have evolved, so too have the look and functionality of windows. If your home has a unique style, search for the type of window applicable to that time period. If you’re not quite sure where to start, a local Pella expert can help you find the type of window that will best suit the needs of your lifestyle and your home.

Don’t forget the small details either! One way to make your windows your own is by upgrading your hardware. If you desire additional customizations, there are many features and options available that can help to improve your home. Between-the-glass grilles add character, while blinds between-the-glass help provide privacy. Both are enclosed between panes of window glass and help cut down on allergens and cleaning time alike. Smart home connectivity through Pella Insynctive Technology allows you to control between-the-glass window blinds from an app on your phone.

Attractive and easy to use, all Pella products are designed to improve your quality of life and the value of your home.

Installing Replacement Windows

Once you’ve nailed down your selection of replacement windows. It’s time to consider your installation methods and options to get your new windows in place. There are two types of methods for installing replacement windows. The complexity of your window renovation project will determine which method is right for you.

Replacing an old casement window with an updated casement window? Pocket installation is the easiest route. This type of installation is used when you are replacing the same type or size of the window. If you’re doing a more complex upgrade to your existing windows, such as adding a bay or bow window in your kitchen where there’s currently a picture window, you’ll have to look into full-frame installation. This type of installation is more time- and labor-intensive as it requires more work on the inside and outside of your home, but allows for greater flexibility.

As far as who does the actual installation? That’s up to you and your Pella representative to decide. You can work directly with one of our manufacturer installers who are versed in all things Pella windows or look into hiring an independent contractor locally. Your nearby home improvement store — like Lowe’s — often partners with subcontractors for window installations as well. If you’re handy, you also have the option to do it yourself — just be sure you research all the steps so you can complete the project correctly.

Understanding Your Window Warranty

Purchasing replacement windows is one of the bigger decisions you’ll make that will impact the quality and value of your home. It’s important for you to know the ins and outs of your window including how to care for the glass and window frame. Work with your installer to have them show you the proper way to clean your windows. Your installer will also show you how to properly operate your window, including opening, closing and locking.

If a problem should arise with your window and it needs servicing, you need to know who to call. All Pella products come with the Pella Care Guarantee, but there are some conditions in place. If you work with someone other than a manufacturer's installer, the warranty coverage can change. When it comes to making an investment like this, a Pella expert can help you choose the best option for the longevity of your windows.

Installing replacement windows in your home is a large project that can greatly benefit your home and lifestyle. Don’t leave any window, or door, unopened during this process — we’re here to help you. Contact your local Pella representative to get started on bring your home renovation dreams to life.
