Project Details

Located just outside of the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities, this Minnesota home is filled with natural light, thanks to its abundance of high-performance windows. Throughout the house, built by custom home builder Kootenia Homes, black fixed and casement windows intentionally left free of grille patterns complement the contemporary new build.

“Windows make the house and its rooms by bringing the outside in and giving the inside something to look forward to,” says Kootenia Homes president David Frosch.

And he’s definitely right about that. If you count every separate piece of glass on the home – 20 windows on the home’s back exterior, seven on the right exterior and 14 on the front exterior – every room in the home works to create an indoor-outdoor connection.

Durable Fiberglass Windows Suited for All Seasons

Because Minnesota winters can be brutally cold, with lots of snowfall and consecutive months below freezing, the team at Kootenia opted to install Pella Impervia fiberglass windows. Pella Impervia products are tested for a lifetime of everyday use and are crafted from the strongest material for windows and patio doors.9 The proprietary fiberglass is a thermoset material, meaning it won’t melt or breakdown when exposed to environmental temperature swings. And with optional insulation and triple-pane glass, these windows maintain exceptional energy efficiency all year round.

In addition to their exceptional durability and energy efficiency, these homeowners appreciate the low-maintenance powder-coat finish on Impervia windows. Their new black windows resist chipping, chalking and fading, meaning these homeowners will never need to paint or refinish their windows.

Contemporary Black Windows Set the Stage

Inside the full-light glass entry door, a floating staircase with cable railing sets the tone for the home’s ultra-contemporary interior design. A neutral color palette welcomes guests inside and establishes the style for the rest of the home. Subdued interior hues allow the stunning windows to take center stage.

Just past the stairway, the floorplan flows to an open dining area, which is illuminated by a 2-wide casement window and contemporary cage light and grounded by a silvery-gray rug. Black, white, stainless steel and dark stained wood materials work together to create both an elegant and intriguing look for this space. The use of black windows throughout helps underscore the contemporary style of the home as well as frame the scenery outside. We especially love how the black interior window finish adds contrast when paired with the white trim.

Living Room Windows Heighten the Space

The pattern of sleek and clean lines, a hallmark of contemporary windows, continues in the living room, where a trio of casement windows connects the casual environment of the lounge area to the inviting beauty of the great outdoors. The low profiles of the built-in cabinets, sectional sofa, coffee table and lamps help accentuate the height of the living room windows and draw the eye outdoors.

A beautiful dark stone fireplace built out from the wall provides a striking focal point against white living room walls. The home’s neutral palette continues to play out in this space where the balance of light and dark colors help achieve visual harmony. The cool colors of the walls, cabinets and couch pair perfectly with warm tones from the wood flooring and throw pillows.

Expansive Picture Windows Highlight the View

Large clerestory windows and a cascading glass light fixture illuminate the way as you head upstairs. The custom picture window on the intermediate landing invites natural light into the home. Sunlight streams into the space and creates a parade of shapely shadows as the day progresses. The combination of black and white hues and clean lines reinforce the home’s minimalist style.

Loft Area with Square Custom Windows

At the top of the stairs, a relaxing loft area awaits. Custom square windows placed high up on the walls allow natural light to flood this level of the home while providing privacy. White walls and the cable railing help the space feel large and airy.

Whether it’s a contemporary or traditional style you seek, windows are available in an array of custom options to bring your vision to life.
