Project Details

Although this Nantucket home was only four years old, the remodel focused on refining the exterior with windows and doors that better aligned with the home's architectural vision while providing exceptional performance for its exposed beachfront location.

The homeowners had one primary objective: preserve the timeless character expected of a Nantucket coastal home without compromising durability. Every design decision needed to satisfy strict aesthetic standards while performing in an environment exposed to salt air, strong winds and changing weather throughout the year.

The Pella team worked alongside Nantucket Architecture Group and TS Builders LLC to replace the home's exterior windows and patio doors with Pella Reserve™ Traditional products designed to complement classic New England architecture.

Wood Windows Help Preserve Classic Coastal Architecture

One of the defining characteristics of this home is its traditional New England appearance. Clean window proportions, divided-light grilles and substantial trim help the home feel authentic to its surroundings while allowing expansive ocean views from nearly every room.

The remodel features a variety of double-hung windows, picture windows and awning windows that were carefully integrated into the home's architecture. White Seacoast EnduraClad® aluminum-clad exteriors pair with primed wood interiors, while traditional putty-glazed sash profiles and ogee detailing reinforce the classic design aesthetic. Matte black hardware provides subtle contrast without distracting from the home's understated exterior. These specifications were selected as part of the project documentation.

Coastal Windows Designed for Year-Round Beachfront Exposure

Beautiful coastal homes require more than attractive design. Constant exposure to sun, wind and salt air places additional demands on every exterior component, making long-term performance an important part of the remodeling process.

For this project, the windows and patio doors were specified with Low-E Advanced insulating glass filled with argon gas to help support energy efficiency while maintaining clear views and abundant natural light. Tempered glass was incorporated where required, and the durable Seacoast EnduraClad® exterior finish was selected to better withstand the challenges of a marine environment. Together, these features allow the windows and doors to support both the architectural vision and the practical needs of a beachfront home.

Traditional Patio Doors Connect Indoor and Outdoor Living

The home's connection to the ocean was another important design consideration. Multiple patio door configurations create a natural transition between interior living spaces and the expansive decks overlooking the water.

The remodel includes hinged patio doors along with fixed door panels that maximize glass area without compromising the traditional appearance of the home. Operating doors feature multipoint locking hardware and InView™ screens, while matte black hardware coordinates with the windows throughout the project. These carefully selected details allow the large openings to feel consistent with the home's traditional character while supporting everyday functionality.

Custom Window and Door Configurations Support the Home's Design

Rather than relying on a handful of standard sizes, the remodel incorporates numerous window and door configurations to fit the home's unique floor plan and exterior elevations. Double-hung windows, picture windows, awning windows and custom patio door assemblies were all used where they best served the architecture and the surrounding views.

This variety allows each elevation to maintain balanced proportions while bringing natural light deep into the home and framing views of the Atlantic from multiple living spaces. The flexibility offered by the Pella Reserve — Traditional product line helped support the architect's vision without sacrificing consistency across the home's exterior.

A Beachfront Home Designed for Generations

The completed remodel demonstrates how carefully selected windows and patio doors can reinforce both architectural character and long-term performance. By combining traditional detailing with durable coastal finishes and high-performance glass, the project remains true to Nantucket's design heritage while addressing the realities of year-round beachfront exposure.

The result is a thoughtfully remodeled coastal home that preserves its timeless appearance while creating comfortable, light-filled spaces for the family to enjoy for years to come.
