The Gallatin Avenue Living Centre sits on North Gallatin Avenue in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, inside the former Gallatin School. The 117-year-old building is a local historic landmark. City Mission Living Stones restored it and turned it into a 30-unit housing and service complex.
All 123 windows were replaced as part of the renovation. The goals were better energy efficiency, more durable windows and a color and style match that kept the building’s historic feel.
Wood Single-Hung and Picture Windows Sized to the Original Openings
Pella Reserve Traditional single-hung windows fill most of the openings, with picture windows where the windows don’t need to open. Many units are custom sizes made to fit the existing masonry openings, and the tallest single-hung windows stand 92 inches high. Where windows sit side by side, two or three units were joined at the factory and arrived on site as one assembly.
The windows have a Putty exterior and a prefinished white interior. The sashes have a putty glaze profile with ogee detailing, and there are no grilles. Each single-hung has a champagne cam-action lock, a sash lift and an InView™ half screen in Putty.
Custom Exterior Trim for Masonry Openings
A three-piece brickmould system in Deep Olive surrounds the windows, with frame expanders and aluminum clips that close the gap between each window and the surrounding masonry. Putty mullion trim covers the joints between grouped windows, and prefinished white pine stops finish the openings on the inside.
Energy-Efficient Glass and Performance Ratings
Every window has dual Low-E insulating glass with argon fill. The single-hung windows are rated at a U-factor of 0.29 and the picture windows at 0.28. Some of the picture windows carry ratings up to PG 70, and a few were ordered with tempered glass. Most of the larger single-hung windows also meet minimum clear opening requirements for egress.
