For interior stylist Melanie Voyer, discovering her current home was love at first sight.
“We knew a lot of work had to be done from an interior design standpoint, but I was already imagining it all in my mind,” Voyer says. “The house felt homey and happy, with so much light and large spaces from the original Pella wood windows and doors. That’s what really sealed the deal for me on this house.”
Here, Melanie takes us on a tour of her beautifully designed home, while offering a few tips for summer decorating.
How would you describe your interior design style?
My interior design style is very bright and white. I like to expose beautiful objects that make me and my family happy without having too much out. Clutter makes me nervous; I like simple and beautiful with a purpose. I also like to add a dash of coastal to my decor weather it’s a bit of stripes here and there, a splash of navy blue or some accessories that remind us of the sea or different beach trips we've been on.
What home items can you not live without?
I love decorative throws and cushions. I change ours all the time. I feel that these are the layers that make a home feel cozy. They are the perfect items to change seasonally if needed, that brings a big impact without investing too much.
Which room in your house is your favorite and why?
Our kitchen is definitely my favorite room! Its where we get-together, cook, eat, talk, connect... It's a beautiful bright space that makes me happy! I love the marble that we choose for our counters it was a longtime dream of mine and despite what everybody was telling me about having marble in the kitchen and how it would be hard to maintain I'm so happy I stuck with my decision and went with this choice.
How can windows impact a space?
Windows are a very important piece of the puzzle when buying a house. It’s where the light flows from and it truly affects the mood of everyone living in the house. Like I mentioned before, when I saw our home for the first time, the first thing I noticed was the LIGHT! We have huge sliding doors and very large windows all around. I'm all about details and I was so happy that all of our windows had a wooden grill in them.
We were lucky because our windows are the original Pella wood windows from 1975. They were very well taken cares of and we can still enjoy them today. There is something very refreshing about pushing up your vintage window on a bright and early morning. Sometimes I find myself popping my head out and feeling like shouting, “good morning!” to the neighborhood.
How can homeowners decorate their homes for summer?
I would keep it simple and fresh. Maybe invest in a nice rattan basket for all the items you need to gather when entertaining, fresh flowers all over the house is always a summer must have and new front door carpets, you can’t go wrong with sisal or any natural fibers in the summer!
