We’ve connected with a few architects to better understand the connection between light and design.
Located just outside of the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities, this contemporary Minnesota home has natural light for days, thanks to its abundance of high performance windows.
“Windows make the house and its rooms by bringing the outside in and giving the inside something to look forward to,” says Kootenia Homes president David Frosch.
And he’s definitely right about that. We counted 20 windows on the home’s back exterior, seven on the right exterior and 14 on the front exterior, if you count every separate piece of glass.

Because winters are brutally cold in Minnesota, the team at Kootenia opted to install Pella Impervia windows, made exclusively with Duracast, the most durable material available in windows.
In testing performed in accordance with ASTM testing standards, Duracast has displayed superior performance in strength, ability to withstand extreme heat and cold, and resistance to dents and scratches. This special material is what helps these windows, which have the quality look of painted wood, maintain exceptional energy efficiency all year round.
Inside the full light glass entry door, a floating staircase with cable railing sets the tone for the home’s ultra-contemporary interior design. Black, white, stainless steel and dark stained wood materials work together to create both an elegant and intriguing neutral look.
A 2-wide casement window casts a complementary layer of natural light to the dining room table, its position establishing a flow between the staircase landing to the entry door. We especially love how the black interior finish adds contrast when paired with the white trim.
The pattern of sleek and clean lines continues in the living room, where a beautiful stone fireplace surround was built out from the wall to make an even more stunning statement. A trio of casement windows connects the casual environment of the lounge area to the inviting beauty of the great outdoors.
Balance is achieved through the use of color, as the cool colors of the wall, cabinets and couch pair perfectly with warm tones from the wood flooring, throw pillows, wall art and fireplace.
As you make your way upstairs, the expansive windows and cascading light fixture lead to a relaxing loft space, which is illuminated by custom square casement windows.
