In the Kitchen with Girl Versus Dough
We’re obsessed with her marble pendant lights and no-fuss bread recipes.
For nearly a decade, Stephanie Wise wowed bread lovers with her self-taught baking skills on the Girl Versus Dough food blog. Today, she enjoys consulting for General Mills as she raises her two darling daughters in a suburb just outside of Minneapolis, MN, where she and her husband built a new home about a year ago.
We love the north side of the Twin Cities, but many of the homes here are old, outdated or too small. When this new development opened up, we took the opportunity to build our dream home in our dream neighborhood. We do love it here. There are many young families, we are close to the lake and to the park and we can drive just 10 minutes to the heart of the Cities.
What inspired the design behind your kitchen?
I've always loved the look of a modern, white kitchen with elements of warmth in dark counters, wood floors, marble finishes, etc. We put most of our thought and investment for the house into the kitchen since it is the heart of our home and I'm almost always in there, so we wanted to go with a look that was neutral but also a reflection of our design personality – modern and cozy.
What three elements are important for you to have in a kitchen?
I'm a messy cook and baker, so I need a big sink to handle all of my dishes. I also need a decent oven and a gas range. I've lived with kitchens that didn't have either and it's a real bummer – thankfully, this one has both and I am so thankful for it!
When did your love affair with cooking begin and where are you in your culinary journey today?
I've been in the kitchen all of my life thanks to my mom and grandmother, the two best cooks and bakers I know. But I didn't start really coming into my own in the kitchen until I got married and needed to feed myself and my husband, and that's when I started really finding my culinary creativity blossom. Now, I have two extra little mouths to feed, so my culinary journey today involves a ton of planning and prepping and making meals that everyone in the family enjoys – even if that just means pancakes for dinner. I work as a recipe development consultant at General Mills, so I can flex my creative muscle in the kitchen a bit more there.
We scoured the Girl Versus Dough archives for another favorite recipe to try. We think you’ll love these Fluffy Coconut Flour Waffles! They are almost too beautiful to eat.
