Sustainable Excellence by Design

Do you know what it takes to make decidedly energy efficient windows and doors sustainably? Pella does.

Since the very beginning, Pella has strived to continuously improve not just our products, but also our methods in an effort to care for the world around us. Whether it is a partnership with the National Arbor Day Foundation in the 1990’s, our work with the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon to challenge collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive or the fact that we recycle more than 90 percent of our sawdust, we recognize that we must always be stewards of our natural resources and the environment.

As part of that improvement process, Pella’s facility in Shenandoah, Iowa embarked on reducing the amount of energy its factory used in 2013 as part of the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry. The facility assembles Pella’s custom designed windows and doors (think round windows and large one-of-a-kind doors) and began making lighting improvements, refining building and system controls, and improving compressed air efficiency. Then the team began conducting energy process events to build awareness about each team member’s role in saving energy. The result of all these efforts? In just one year, the Shenandoah facility experienced a 12.4 percent reduction in energy intensity.

Soon, two of our other facilities, in Sioux Center and Carroll, Iowa joined the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry and saw a 12.9 percent (Sioux Center) and 14.3 percent (Carroll) reduction in energy use over two years.  And we plan to add two more facilities in two more years!

It is changes like this and our commitment to sustainability that led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to distinguish us with the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence Award in 2016. We’ve earned Partner of the Year nine times, and this is now our fifth Sustained Excellence recognition with no plans of stopping our sustainability efforts.
