@mikestevenshomes accomplished a dreamy and vibrant farmhouse look by incorporating tables and glass cabinets with curved legs, a rustic chandelier, and plenty of window styles into the space’s design.
A trio of horizontal fixed windows close to the room’s high ceiling, coupled with low-level double-hung windows and a sliding glass door flood the room with natural light from every angle.
Design tip: While more windows is an obvious solution for increasing natural light and creating contemporary style, using white window frames like the ones pictured above can also make a room appear brighter.
Designed by Lucy Penfield of @lucyinteriordesign, this living room is the perfect blend of bohemian and contemporary styles. To give an otherwise neutral room a natural, warm touch, Penfield decorated it with a tan roman shade, orange chunky loop area rug, wooden table and tropical house plant. Horizontal lines from the couch, artwork and white window grilles add contrast and complete the look.
Design tip: Window grilles can be customized to complement your home’s unique style and are available in wood, fiberglass and vinyl.

Clean lines, expansive casement windows and an electric fireplace give this Minnesota living room a modern contemporary vibe. The room’s gray, black and white color scheme is warmed up by mustard tones from the throw pillows, artwork and fireplace flames.
Design tip: If you want your contemporary living room to have a touch of classic charm, try incorporating a button-tufted sofa into your floorplan (see gray sofa pictured above).

The best contemporary designs are both beautiful and functional. Designed by Castle Homes, this living room features beautiful sliding doors, rectangular skylights and a wooden ceiling alongside functional furniture and built-in storage.
Design tip: The obvious place for built ins is to the left and right of the fireplace, but some contemporary homes also feature entire walls dedicated to built-in storage nooks and cabinets. Use nooks for books, candles, family pictures and statement décor pieces, and store toys, blankets and extra throw pillows in cabinets. That way, you’ll have everything you need to have a functional living room — all in one place.

Jean Stoffer’s living room design is as stately as it is contemporary, making it truly one-of-a-kind. Notice how the contemporary exposed wooden ceiling beams create movement and make the room feel even more grand in stature. After taking in the beams and chandelier, the button-tufted sofa draws your eye from the ceiling to the floor, where a crisp, abstract rug anchors the room in a contemporary look.
Design tip: Just because you’re aiming for a contemporary feel doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate other design styles. Whether you want to blend in farmhouse, bohemian, modern or traditional elements, you can create a contemporary space that is both current and custom to your taste.
