Inside Catherine Bell’s California Home
"The Good Witch" star adds modern touches to her newly updated home.
When Catherine Bell discovered a gray and white traditional home just outside of Los Angeles, it was love at first sight. “I knew right away that it was the perfect home for me,” says Bell. “It’s light and bright and there is something very cozy and inviting about it.”
But, like any older home, Bell also knew it was going to take some work before its design and function matched up with her distinctive style and taste. The bones were there, but the aesthetics needed a little updating.
“The front door was probably the first thing I wanted to change. It was very 80s and had a stained glass, old-fashioned look,” says Bell, whose style runs from somewhat traditional to modern. “We worked with Matt, who is our Pella rep, and I immediately fell in love with the glass panels on the side.”
Bell’s new Architect Series front door features three panels, along with a pair of sidelights, which perfectly illuminate the home’s entryway. When paired with the home’s traditional details, the modern door provides just the right amount of contrast and contributes to the home’s updated transitional design.
The next space Bell knew she wanted to update was the living room. “When you walk through the door, the living room is the first thing you see, so it was really important for me to make the space really beautiful,” she says.
To accomplish a more modern home design, including the indoor-outdoor vibe Bell was looking for, Pella installed an 8-foot four-panel sliding patio door. Because the doors slide open in the middle, the door is able to be almost completely opened – a must for maximizing the Bell family’s living space.
“It has the screens that close automatically which is great for keeping out the bugs at night so you get the fresh air,” says Bell. “You can open it up completely, so, you’re playing pool, you’re going in and out the kids are going in and out and swimming and eating and it’s lovely.”
Now that every room has been updated to match Bell’s modern style and taste, The Good Witch star has settled in and finally feels completely at home.
“I really loved the home when I first bought it but it wasn’t mine yet,” says Bell. “As I started adding my touches to it, and adding these beautiful doors and windows, I love coming home at the end of the day. It’s homey, inviting and mine.”
