In the Kitchen with The Beach House Kitchen

Her recipes for casual entertaining and style will wow you.

After spending her summers at the Jersey Shore growing up, Mary Ann Dwyer and her husband Tom built their own custom home in Avalon, New Jersey in 2000. Not long after designing her dream kitchen, Mary Ann launched The Beach House Kitchen blog to share her love of cooking with the world.

Pella: Why name your blog “The Beach House Kitchen?”
Mary Ann: I grew up my entire life lucky enough to spend summers at the Jersey Shore. My fondest memories are from times spent there with family and friends and the wonderful meals we have shared together.

What inspired the design behind your kitchen?
Tom and I entertain all summer long, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so we needed a kitchen that would accommodate all our guests and still be an amazing functional space. Our inspiration was to create not only a cook's kitchen, but an entertaining kitchen. We needed a big island for people to gather around, a bar area to mix cocktails for our friends and family who pop in, and lots of storage for our small kitchen appliances, serving pieces and pantry items.

What do you love about your kitchen now that it’s come to life?
My kitchen is by far my favorite room in my home. I'm in my element when I'm in the kitchen. I feel stress-free because the layout flows so well and everything is so well organized.

What three elements are important for you to have in a kitchen?
Quality, functionality and style.

When did your love affair with cooking begin and where has it taken you?
My love affair with cooking began as a child. Both my mother and my grandmother were amazing cooks. I loved to watch them cook and loved to help in the kitchen whenever I could. I started my blog, The Beach House Kitchen, as a way to share the recipes I make for family and friends with the internet community, and have grown my little piece of the internet into a profitable business. I hope to continue this for many years to come.

Favorite recipe of the moment?
My favorite recipe of the moment would have to be my Bacon and Fig Guacamole. This recipe has been on repeat throughout the football championships and will surely be on the menu for the Super Bowl.
