Governor's Environmental Award

Using resources responsibly

In 2007, Pella was awarded the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award by Iowa Governor Chet Culver and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Our company was recognized for its leadership in waste management including recycling wood generated in manufacturing Pella windows and doors, rather than incinerating it or sending it to the landfill.

Our approach

  • Pella's culture of continuous improvement has resulted in increased recycling, reducing waste going into the landfill.
  • Our modified recycling processes and material segregation on assembly lines has led to more scrap wood available to be recycled into wood flour, landscape mulch and livestock bedding.
  • Increased recycling efficiencies has reduced tonnage sent to the landfill by as much as 175 tons per month.
  • Pella uses these same principles of efficient utilization and waste management when working with alternative materials like engineered fiberglass, vinyl or aluminum.

Pella’s Culture of Stewardship

"Our commitment to environmental stewardship is firmly rooted in our culture, just as it has been since our company was founded in 1925. Pella Corporation is honored to be recognized for our voluntary efforts in using and recycling resources — like wood — responsibly."
